Kolkata. In the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress won 213 out of 292 seats, the last time the BJP got 77 seats on 3 seats. The analysis of the results shows that the Trinamool Congress was successful in reuniting many Hindus, Adivasis and Dalit voters in South Bengal with 240 assembly constituencies, who supported the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, in TMC, two TMC chief ministers lost, while the BJP won 30 of the 54 seats. After the results, the Election Commission said that TMC got 47.9 per cent votes in Bengal, BJP’s share was 38.1 per cent. There was a difference of about 98 per cent votes in both the parties. Even in 2011, when TMC and Congress contested, the Left Front received 7.4 per cent less votes. In 2011 and 2016, TMC won 184 and 211 seats respectively. The BJP could not win any seats in 2011, but in 2016 it won 3 seats. The saffron party won 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. According to that result, the BJP was ahead in 121 assembly seats, but the picture changed in some districts during the 8-phase assembly election. In North and South Bengal, the BJP received considerable votes in areas adjacent to India-Bangladesh, where Hindus from East Pakistan after 1947 and 1971 have a significant population. This also happened in Malda and Murshidabad where Muslims have a high population. Muslims account for 51.27 per cent of the population in Malda district, BJP occupied Habibpur seat with 47.52 per cent votes, while TMC got 37.66 per cent votes here. This is among the 5 seats in Malda on which BJP won, the remaining 7 seats went to TMC’s account. In adjoining Murshidabad, which is a part of South Bengal, the share of Muslims in the population is 66.28 per cent, the highest among all districts of Bengal. Along with religious polarization, caste politics was also an important factor in the North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts, where the Hindu Dalit community has a good presence. In 2019, BJP won Nadia and Ranaghat and Bongaon Lok Sabha seats of North 24 Parganas by securing majority of Dalit votes. To attract Dalits, the saffron party promised to implement the CAA in Bengal so that the people of the Matua community, who are part of the Namasudra community, came as refugees from Bangladesh. BJP MP from Bongaon and All India Matua Mahasangh chief Shantanu Thakur said, “The results showed that the Matua community remained with the BJP.”
